Project title
Strengthening the Application of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) to Improve Cancer Treatment (RCA)
Objective
To improve cancer treatment in the Asia-Pacific region by further developing regional capacities and capabilities in the application of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy(SBRT) to treat cancer
Background
- Growing cancer threat in the Asia-Pacific region, especially in developing countries
- Difficulty in sharing technological advancement due to lack of infrastructure and human resource
- Possibility of investment in physical infrastructure according to the economic development or policy priority change in a short-term period
- Significance of timely training of necessary personnel as a long-term solution

Each participating government designates the National Project Coordinator(NPC) to IAEA. NPCs are responsible for building a national project team, holding national events, recommending proper candidates for the regional training courses, distributing the technology in the country, and reporting the progress to the government and IAEA.

Project Program
- Regional training courses: One week training course for radiation oncologists & medical physicists. 4 regional training courses scheduled during the project, one per each year from 2012 to 2015. The 1st RTC was held in Singapore in December, 2012, focusing on the basics of SBRT.
- Expert mission: On-site consultation by expert group to introduce SBRT & protocol application and to transfer knowhow and experiences to regional training hubs
- Project planning meeting: To plan and discuss the activities of the project among the National Project Coordinators
- Progress review meeting: To review mid-term & final progress achieved during the project
The 2nd Regional Training Course(RTC)
The 2nd RTC will be held in Korea from Dec 2 to 6, 2013, focusing on liver and lung cancer. A minimum of 32 participants from 16 countries will participate in one week training courses. The participants are composed of radiation oncologist and medical physicist. The course will include lectures, discussions, practices, etc.
